482 Visa Requirements in 2026: A Quick Guide to Eligibility and Application

For Australian employers looking to fill skilled positions that cannot be filled locally, the Subclass 482 visa provides a pathway to sponsor eligible overseas workers. Now known as the Skills in Demand (SID) visa, the Subclass 482 allows eligible skilled professionals to live and work in Australia while working in an eligible occupation for up to four (4) years, with pathways to permanent residency in some cases.

The visa is designed for skilled professionals working in eligible occupations, although requirements and processing times can vary depending on the stream.

 3 DISTINCT STREAMS

Core Skills Stream

The Core Skills Stream is the most common option. It covers occupations on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL).

Specialist Skills Stream

The Specialist Skills Stream is designed for highly paid roles earning above the Specialist Skills Income Threshold.

Labour Agreement Stream

The Labour Agreement Stream is available when your employer has a negotiated Labour Agreement. It often supports sectors like aged care or regional industries with lower salary options.

3 KEY STAGES

Stage 1: Sponsorship Approval

If your employer isn’t already an approved sponsor, they must apply for sponsorship first. For new sponsors, the process typically takes 89 days to 5 months.

Stage 2: Nomination Approval

Your employer must nominate you for a specific position. This stage typically takes 4 to 8 months and is often one of the biggest bottlenecks in the process.

Stage 3: Visa Application Decision

Once the nomination is lodged, you can submit your visa application the two can be lodged together for the 482 visa, though the visa can't be granted until the nomination is approved. Processing times vary significantly depending on the stream. (This is different from the 407 visas, which now requires nomination approval before lodging.)

BASIC 482 VISA REQUIREMENTS

1.   Employer Sponsorship

One of the key requirements for a 482 visa is having an approved Australian employer sponsor.

The employer must:

  • Be an approved Standard Business Sponsor.

  • Nominate a genuine position that meets the visa requirements.

  • Demonstrate that they have been unable to find a suitably qualified and available Australian worker for the position.

2. Nominated Occupation on the Skilled List

The nominated position must also be included on an eligible Australian Skilled Occupation List, such as:

  • Short-Term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL)

  • Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL)

3. Relevant Work Experience

One (1) year full-time (or equivalent part-time/casual) at a skilled level, within the five (5) years preceding the application.

4. Skills Assessment (if necessary)

Some occupations require a skills assessment from a recognised assessing authority. Many assessing authorities do allow RPL (Recognised Prior Learning) as a pathway when the applicant doesn't have a formal qualification but has substantial relevant work experience instead.

5. English Language Requirement

Common ways to meet the English language requirement for a 482 visa include taking an approved English language test, such as:

  • IELTS

  • PTE Academic

  • TOEFL iBT

  • Cambridge English Test

6. Health Requirements

This may require applicants to undergo a medical examination conducted by an approved panel doctor. These health checks help ensure that applicants meet Australia’s health requirements and do not pose a public health risk.

 7.  Character Requirements

Must meet character requirements, typically by providing police clearance certificates from countries where they have lived for a specified period.

Employer Nomination Requirements

In addition to meeting the applicant eligibility criteria, the employer must also meet specific sponsorship and nomination requirements.

The employer must:

  • Submit a valid nomination application.

  • Offer a genuine position

  • Pay the market salary rate

  • Ensure the employee receives fair working conditions

Meeting these obligations is an essential part of the 482 visa process. Seeking professional legal assistance can help ensure that the required documents are prepared accurately and reduce the risk of errors or delays.

I love how chaotic some of the matches can become. One moment you’re defending your goal, and the next you’re rushing forward with a chance to score. That constant change of momentum keeps Football Bros entertaining from the beginning of the match until the final seconds.
