Partner Visa in 2026: Evidence, Timelines and Common Mistakes

A Partner visa allows the spouse or de facto partner of an Australian citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen to live in Australia. Approval comes down to one thing, showing a genuine and continuing relationship. Here's what to prepare in 2026.

The Partner Visa Pathways

There are different Partner visa pathways depending on where you apply and your circumstances.

Onshore: 

If you are applying in Australia the pathway is the Partner Visa (Subclass 820) followed by the Partner Visa (Subclass 801).

Offshore: 

If you are applying outside Australia, the pathway is the Partner (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 309) followed by the Partner (Migrant) Visa (Subclass 100).

For engaged couples applying from outside Australia, the Prospective Marriage Visa (Subclass 300) is the appropriate pathway.

Partner visa application fees rose on 1 July 2026.

The 4 Pillars of Evidence

A successful Partner visa application relies on providing evidence that demonstrates a genuine and continuing relationship. This evidence is generally assessed across four key areas.

1.     Financial

Financial evidence may include joint bank accounts, shared bills, and major purchases made together.

2.     Household

Household evidence may include living together, a shared lease or utility accounts, and how household responsibilities are shared.

3.     Social

Social evidence may include photos taken over time, trips together, messages, Form 888 statements, and how you present yourselves as a couple to family and friends.

4.     Nature of Commitment

Evidence of commitment may include your long-term plans together, your knowledge of each other, and how you have managed periods of time apart.

Timelines & What to Expect

The Partner visa is a two-stage process.

The permanent stage is usually assessed about two (2) years later. Throughout the process, it is important to continue keeping your relationship evidence up to date.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Some common mistakes include providing thin or inconsistent evidence, leaving gaps in the relationship timeline, relying on weak Form 888 statements, missing the requirements for the permanent stage, or making DIY errors on a high-stakes application.
